Designing learning experiences involves more than adopting or adapting technology and resources — it also involves adopting transdisciplinary research methodologies to ensure that learners are accessing, using, and engaging with these experiences in meaningful ways that prompt persistence and performance. In this session, learn how research traditions from fields as diverse as marketing, human computer interaction, design science, and neuroscience can be leveraged to construct a learning design research lifecycle that involves learners at every stage of experience design and iteration. In this session, learn about establishing foundational research, such as learner personas and learning principles, formative research, such as codesign groups and usability testing, and semi-summative research, including engagement and performance testing. The session will focus on both fast-and-easy research methods and more sophisticated types of learner research, and will culminate with practical tips you can use to institute your own learning design research practice.
The structure will include:
An overview of an adapted research agenda
A deeper-dive into two specific types of research and findings
A demonstration of a research technique (pending technology acquisition)
A discussion
Additional resources for the audience
The outcomes will be:
1) Understand the role of transdisciplinary research in learning design
2) Devise a transdisciplinary research agenda for learning experience design
