Wikipedia disrupted the information world. Is it time to help it disrupt the classroom? Firsthand participation can extend the Wikipedia conversation beyond rigid rules and paternalistic pronouncements. After all, students can already rattle off well-memorized reasons why they shouldn’t cite Wikipedia in their papers. Encouraging them to explore active, critical roles in the Wikipedia community can teach them valuable lessons about how information is properly evaluated, refined, substantiated, and disseminated. This presentation would offer theoretical perspectives for situating Wikipedia in the classroom, suggest practical teaching approaches and applications, and report preliminary research findings.
