A development team of Online Education and English Department faculty members at UNLV are working to change the shape, use, and development of textbooks on our campus. Our first application is a prototype online textbook created for an upper-level grammar course. This presentation will describe the ways big data/learning analytics and Learning 3.0 helped guide our collaborative authoring, publishing, and database design processes. As an emerging technology on our campus, this comprehensive, multimodal textbook will provide an adaptive learning environment to improve student outcomes and help maintain coherence and consistency across sections and from semester to semester. Using available (and future) technologies, this online textbook will provide interactive applications, personalize learning for students, facilitate personal connections, and integrate assessment. More importantly, as an online textbook, student use and learning patterns can be recorded and analyzed to guide meaningful revisions, customize the individual experience for students and individual instructors, and improve instruction each semester and over time. Finally, this approach to textbook design and application will help us meet a larger, more comprehensive goal for using and promoting open learning and open educational resources across campus.
