Are you looking forward to #ELD15? Your conference organizers are hard at work these last few days making sure all the details are just right for an exceptional event.
Whether you’ve joined us every year or are new to the ELD Experience this year, please read the following information carefully, it is likely to make the day easier and more enjoyable.
CHECK-IN
Check-in will be open from 8:00am until 1:30pm. The check-in desk is located just inside the main entrance of University Hall, at the entrance end of the Grand Concourse. Everyone must check in here.
Bring a paper copy of your tickets (a duplicate will be sent to you a couple of days before the conference) or display the code from your ticket on a mobile device. If you don’t have either, please see the staff member at the CONCIERGE DESK
CONCIERGE DESK
This desk, located just inside the main entrance to University Hall, will be open from 8:00am until 9:30am. The primary purpose of this desk it to assist those who may need help getting attached to the MSU Network. It is also where those who do not bring a paper or electronic copy of their ticket will check in.
BREAKFAST, BEVERAGE BREAKS, & LUNCH
A Continental Breakfast will be served in the Grand Concourse, just beyond the Check-In area. Breakfast will open at 8:00am and will remain open until 9:30am. The breakfast included assorted mini bagels, muffins, Danish, fresh sliced fruit, OJ, coffee and tea.
There will be a Beverage Break in the ADP Center Lobby from 10:30am to 11:00am and then again from 11:45am to 12:00pm. A buffet lunch will be served on the 7th floor. Use the elevators nearest the Check-In area. Lunch will be served from 1pm to 2pm.
DIRECTIONS, TRAVEL, HOTELS, ETC.
Visit http://eld.montclair.edu/travel-venue/ for a link to a Google Map set for MSU as a destination. You’ll also find a link for directions to campus and campus maps here.
Please note there is construction going on and some walkways are closed, which may affect listed walking direction on campus. One of those is the direct path from the Red Hawk Parking Deck to University Hall. If that path, blocked off behind Dickson Hall, is open, you can take that directly to University Hall. If it is not open (and you can see it as you walk), then you’ll need to walk around to the front of Dickson Hall and then to University Hall.
If you plan to stay in the area overnight, there are two local hotels listed at that link. Both are within 15 minutes drive to MSU and have told us they offer shuttle service. Check with the hotel for details.
PARKING
The best place to park on campus is the Red Hawk Deck. You can find the rate card below.
Park on the 5th floor and exit the deck through the NORTH CAMPUS exit. You’ll see a soccer pitch, two large white buildings, and a brick building, in front of you as you exit. The larger white building in the background, with the 7+ story bell tower, is University Hall. There is a campus map located at http://www.montclair.edu/campus-map/ and a map kiosk as soon as you come out of the parking deck.
ELD has made special arrangements with MSU Parking Services to offer you a special day-rate for parking in the Red Hawk Deck. The special rate is $6.00 cash. You can see a parking service representative in the Check-In area between 8am and 9am or outside the lunch area from 1pm to 2pm. You provide the parking representative with six dollar cash along with the white parking entrance card you receive when you enter the deck and s/he will give you a validated green card to be presented when exiting the parking deck. Regrettably, the parking vendor does not accept credit cards for the purchase of the discounted parking passes. You can use your credit card to pay at a parking kiosk in the deck (or the exit gate), you’d just need to pay the regular non-discounted rate. Please see the Parking Services representative at the times indicated above if you have any questions.
WIFI NETWORK ACCESS
What would a conference be without access to the Internet? We have arranged for wifi Internet access for the entire conference day. There are several things you will need to do, however, in order to make sure you’ll be able to access the network. Please read the following page carefully http://eld.montclair.edu/connecting-to-the-internet/ it will save you time once you get here. Although we will have tech support on hand to help address any potential issues accessing the networking, we cannot do anything about devices that do not meet MSU’s requirements, so please check your devices early in order to be able to have as much time as possible to trouble shoot any issues.
LUNCHTIME ROUNDTABLES
The very popular Lunchtime Roundtables are back again and we have a nice selection of topics this year, each one was suggested and voted on by this year’s attendees.
At each themed table we will have a few conversation prompting question cards to get things going and there may also be a facilitator for part of the time. Twice during lunch a horn will be sounded and an announcement made indicating that those who’d like may change topic tables. You’re welcome to visit as many as you want, or just one (or none, there will be a handful of tables with no discussion topic).
The #ELD15 Lunchtime Roundtable topics are:
- Assessment
- Critical Thinking
- Emerging Technologies
- Gamification & Games
- NMC.org
- New Educational Technologies
- Instructional Design
- Learning Technologies
- Pedagogy and Design
- Self-Directed Learning
- Twitter Users
- Web Development & Trends
Do any of the above interest you enough to help facilitate the start of conversation at the table? You don’t need to be an expert in the topic area, just interested. The facilitator’s task is just to encourage folks to talk about the topic. If you’d be willing to begin lunch at one of the above topic tables and to help facilitate, please email me at keltona@mail.montclair.edu and let me know what topic(s) you’re interested in.
PROGRAM
We have an excellent program for you this year and we know it is often hard to decide which of our exceptional presentations to go to. In order to help with that process, please visit http://eld.montclair.edu/eld15-schedule for a downloadable version of the program or visit http://bit.ly/eld15prog. A limited number of printed programs will be available on site. We encourage you to “go green” and use a digital copy of the program is that works for you. If not, there’s always the paper version.
SESSION AND CONFERENCE EVALUATIONS
Do you know what a QR code is? It’s one of those funny looking squares made up of dots and lines. When you use a QR Code Reader from your mobile device (a camera is needed in order to snap the QR code), the QR code redirects you to a specific web page.
This year ELD has assigned a QR code to each presentation evaluation form. After each presentation you’ll be able to snap the QR code and complete the online evaluation, on-the-spot. QR codes will be posted on the door sign for each session and (hopefully) each presenter will display it at the end of the session.
There is also a QR code on the back page of the program – this code is for the general “conference” evaluation, for all those things that are not specific to the individual sessions. This evaluation form will not be available online until after the conference has ended.
In case you don’t plan to use the QR codes, no worries, there is also a shortened URL below each QR Code and it will take you to the same page.
All evaluations will stay open for two weeks after the conference has ended. All responses are eligible for our evaluation giveaway if you submit contact information with each evaluation. If you choose to participate, each session evaluation will earn you one (1) entry and completing the general conference evaluation will earn you two entries. Four entries will be randomly drawn and we will be giving away one (1) Kindle Fire 7, 7” HD Display, wi-fi, 16GB, and three (3) Registration Plus Cocktail Party registrations for the 6th Annual Emerging Learning Design Conference on June 2nd, 2016.
REGISTRATION STILL OPEN
You’re registered, so you’ve already seen the benefit of attending #ELD15, why not share that with your colleagues – make it party! There are still a very limited number of Advanced Registrations open and at $135, I’m sure you agree, ELD is an amazing value for the return-on-investment.
EVENT PARTNERS
Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t send out a special thank-you to Larry Johnson and the amazing folks over at The New Media Consortium (nmc.org) and Provost Gingerich, Associate Provost Cote-Bonanno, and the great folks here at MSU. Both NMC and MSU are the Event Partners for #ELD15, which would not have be possible without their support.
A lot to digest, but you’ve got a week to check it all out. See you on Friday.
Best,
